Puppy will require a series of 3 vaccinations given at ages 6-8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks. These vaccinations will provide your puppy with protection against Parvovirus, Canine Hepatitis, Canine Distemper and two strains of Canine Cough.
Once the series of vaccinations are complete, Puppy will require a booster at 15 months of age then yearly boosters in order to maintain this immunity.
Puppy’s worming for gastrointestinal worms will need to provide protection against whipworm, hookworm, roundworm and tape worm.
Your pup needs to be wormed fortnightly till 12 weeks old then monthly until 6 months old. After 6 months they will be wormed 3 monthly for life
Heartworm is a mosquito borne disease causing an infection in the heart and blood vessels with worm called Dirofilaria immitis. If pets are infected with heartworm, treatment is difficult. Risk of infection in the Brisbane climate is high, so prevention is recommended for all dogs.
Pups start heartworm prevention from 12 weeks of age or earlier and will continue the medication for life. The Heartworm prevention is either give monthly as a chew or spot on, or annually with the Proheart SR12 injection.
Flea and Tick
Unfortunately, the Brisbane fleas thrive if adequate prevention is not used. Because of this, we recommend flea prevention for all pets all year.
Ticks are also common in this area, particular the deadly paralysis tick.

There are a variety of companies available that offer pet insurance, and we recommend to all of our client consider insuring their pup. Taking pet insurance while a pup is young when they has a clean bill of health is a great way to start your insurance policy.
We recommend desexing at 6 months of age for all dogs except large breed dogs. Current evidence indicates that delaying desexing for large breed dogs till they reach 15 months old may reduce the incidence of future joint disease.
Desexing not only prevents unwanted litters, but it can help to prevent roaming and fighting, and decreases the risks of certain cancers in both males and females. It will also prevent a deadly infection that can develop in the uterus of bitches.
Microchipping offers a permanent means of identification with the microchip number registered to an Australia wide database. By law, all dogs must be microchipped. Remember to update your information it if you move, or change phone numbers. Dental disease is common problem affecting a large number of our patients. By starting your pup on a dental routine now, we may be able to prevent the development of dental disease in the future.
Gently brushing will a finger brush is the ideal first step to brushing. Raw carrots are a great dental chew. Bones are not recommended as they are a major cause of tooth fractures, and intestinal problems.
