Moulting in Pet Bids
Birds moult to replace damaged feather so they can fly, maintain body heat and remain waterproof
In most birds, a moult happens once a year and is associated with day length. Some birds such as parrots will lose a few feathers at a time all year round. A moult requires lots of energy and nutrients, so feeding a good quality food is essential. Seed alone may not be enough. Pelletized foods provide the nutrients required, and supplying a variety of green, fruit, vegetables and nuts is always advised.
Occasionally, a bird will have an abnormal moult with malformed and distorted feathers. Poor nutrition is the most common cause of this, but it can also be an indicator of stress or other underlying illness. Contact us for more information if you your bird is looking scruffy
